Ann Arbor Area locations that shine, even in the winter
In the summer, it can be overwhelming to sift through the numerous photoshoot location options. However, winter months often pose the opposite problem.
Greenery, flowers and other natural elements are some of the most sought after backdrops for a photoshoot. But, any Michigander knows that the weather is typically at its peak between May and October. The rest of the time we are battling snow, dead trees, mud and gray skies.
However that does not mean you should never take photos during this time of year. It's still incredibly possible to create timeless photos during any month and weather condition, we just might have to get a little creative on our background.
I took the time to scout out the best locations in the Ann Arbor Area for taking photos on gray winter days.
Matthaei Botanical Gardens
1800 N. Dixboro Rd., Ann Arbor
If you want a tropical vibe to your photos, but its winter in Michigan, then consider Matthaei Botanical Gardens. While their outdoor area is beautiful in the summer, their conservatory is full of lush foliage year-round. They have a large variety of plants and cacti in the conservatory, with a range of colors represented throughout. It is important to note that Matthaei Botanical Gardens charges a fee for professional photography. This will be added to the cost of your session.
Pro tip: If this is the spot you chose, make sure you don't wear clothing that you might overheat in. It is warm in the conservatory year-round, so you might want to dig up your favorite summer clothes for your session.
Island Park
1420 Island Dr, Ann Arbor.
Island Park is a hidden gem in Ann Arbor. I found it while taking my own maternity photos. At the time, it was early spring, so I was looking for somewhere that provided a unique backdrop other than dead trees. Just over the bridge at Island Park is a Greek Revival shelter. I love how it feels like it is straight out of Mamma Mia. It is so fun to get creative at this location, especially on evenings when the sun lines up just right and we can play with fun shadows.
Nickels Arcade
326 S State St, Ann Arbor,
Nickels Arcade is one of those locations where the lighting is always spectacular. Not only does the glass roof protect you from getting wet, but it also filters the sun just enough to prevent unwanted shadows and glares on sunny days. For anyone who loves hanging out Downtown Ann Arbor, this is a cool spot to take portraits of individuals, families and couples.
Parker Mill County Park
4650 Geddes Rd, Ann Arbor
Since there is so much texture and structure throughout the park, it’s a great place to take photos year round. Even in the winter, this park creates a stunning backdrop for timeless photos. The site has a historic mill and log cabin that provides backgrounds that do not depend on natural elements.
University of Michigan's Campus
There are several unique corners of University of Michigan's Campus that are great for those gloomy day photoshoots. The architectural elements of campus provide interesting backgrounds for any kind of portrait. A popular spot for photos is the Law Quad on campus, especially the covered portion that is perfect for avoiding precipitation.
